Artists work in a series in order to develop their ideas or concepts more fully than they could in one single piece. Motivations to work in a series include: to investigate and explore a subject, story, or technique, when there is an emotional response, to develop an artistic identity, as a business move, and many more.
TRIPTYCH: A painting or carving that has three side-by-side parts, panels, or canvases.A triptych can also be, more loosely, something composed or presented in three parts or sections.


QUADRIPTYCH: A painting or carving that has four side-by-side parts, panels, or canvases.

POLYPTYCH: A painting or carving that has multiple (more than three) side-by-side parts, panels, or canvases.

These are all examples of relief tile series that are designed to be displayed together.

Transition

TRANSITION: Process of changing from one state or form to another (smooth to rough surface).

Sculpture Processes:
MODELING: Creating forms with pliable materials such as clay by using the hands and tools.

CASTING: Creating forms by pouring liquid material into a mold and allowing it to harden.

MOLDMAKING: Creating a hollow negative form around an existing positive form, for the purpose of casting.

ADDITIVE SCULPTURE: 3-D work made by putting pieces of material together to build up a form.

SUBTRACTIVE SCULPTURE: 3-D work made by removing excess material from a larger piece of material.
